Button badges that look like flowers…nice!
July 27th, 2008
I’ve been busy making lots of badges/brooches from buttons this week since I ordered a load of these brooch pins – I got a pack of 50, so going try and make 50 brooches before I go on holiday…

…that’s if i have enough buttons as I’m running out, but at least with these button brooches I can use up what I term the button dregs – all those lonely singular buttons that have been left out of so many projects.
Anyway – here is the first button flower brooch I made:

I just used 5 red buttons for the petals and a larger yellow button for the centre. The buttons are all wired together with silver wire. I then added a brooch pin to the back, but it all felt a little bit too flimsy and fragile. Here’s the back:

So for the next one I wanted to find something that I could stitch the buttons to and I opted for leather as it wouldn’t fray. So I cut some circles from that old leather jacket I’ve been making pencil cases and pouches from and use those.
For the next brooch I wired together 5 blue buttons with silver wire. I then stitched these to a circle of leather. I then stitched a brooch pin to the back and then added the final touch of the large centre yellow button, which was attached to the leather with silver wire which got twisted and fastened around the brooch pin at the back – all felt a lot sturdier.

I’ll be adding all the brooches I’ve made to my shop sometime next week.
Here is a list of the one’s available:

What a fantastic idea, my Mum does loads of knitting and has a tinful of off buttons, guess what I will be doing for the next coffee morning.

Looks like you’ll be busy! These are great to make and I would definitely recomend using a backing fabric of some sort as it makes the buttons more sturdy. You could dispence of the silver wire and just use coloured thread or wool instead…the options are endless!
