Recycling Pin
July 10th, 2008
Ok so I’m a keen recycler. I try to reduce the amount of packaging that comes through my door and generally only allow items that can be recycled. Well the other day we got some garden furniture and although it was wrapped in sturdy cardboard [OK] it was secured with strong plastic strips [not OK]. So I set myself the task to come with some ideas of what to make with them…so they got plonked onto my studio floor and I’ve been tripping over them ever since!
The most obvious thing to do was to weave them into mats, but I decided against that as I didn’t think they would look that attractive and didn’t think they would sell either, especially as I’d only be able to make a couple of them, so not much of a set there.
Then I just started playing with it and started curving it into those kind of fancy gift tag decorations you put on nicely wrapped presents, but as the plastic is quite strurdy it was difficult to hold it all in place without it pinging into my face and nearly dislodging an eyeball.
So I just did a simple single loop and hey presto got a eureka moment! Thinking along the lines of the pink breast cancer ribbons and the ones you also get to support Aids/HIV charities too I thought I’d make one to do with recycling…what do you think?

Still needs a little work as the plastic splits when I puch a hole through it using and awl, so I’m thinking I might need to heat the awl and melt a hole through insead. I now need to figure out how to make these into brooches by adding a clasp of some sort – maybe those tiny little brass safety pins will do the trick. Might need to get the glue gun out…
