Bean Bag Prototype

January 31st, 2009

We’ll soon be holding regular film nights in our mini cinema and so I’ve taken on the task of making some bean bags. I’ve been collecting vintage fabric and thinking up patterns and tonight have made my first prototype to test out my pattern. I love it!

It’s got a small pentagon shape as the top and a larger one as the base with 5 panels joining the two up.

I went for this kind of shape as I don’t particularly like the standard teardrop form of the bean bags you get in the shop, but also because with this more flat kind of bean bag with a regular shape, we’ll be able to easily plonk 4 down next to each other and have a cosy bean bag space for people to sit on.

I also think this kind of shape would looks good with 5 panels of different coloured/patterned vintage fabric. I’ve been scouring charity shops for months and got myself quite a stash of old curtains and funky patterned fabric. Still need to source the following:

  1. Old sheets to make the inner linings that will contain the polystyrene beads
  2. Velcro to use for the fastening of the outer bean bag

I now have the tricky task of scaling this up to make the actual bean bags to sit on…not sure how to do this, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

Brilliant – I agree tha the shape will make it much easier to sit alongside others. I look forward to seeing the “real” versions!
