Work In Progress – Lily Brooch

March 17th, 2010

I started on this little brooch idea a few weeks ago and it’s been in limbo ever since as I’ve been busy with other things, but I hope to get the first one finished by the end of the week. I intend to make 5 little brooches  – all from the  teaspoon bowls from a set of teaspoons I acquired recently. The spoon handles were soldered onto the bowls in such a way that they were very easy to remove with a little heat, which left the bowl shape intact.

Once the handles were remove and I saw the shape of the bowls I instantly wanted to add a curved stem or stamen like shape echoing the forms of a lily, flower or leaf and so I started fashioning a curved piece of wire into the desired shape.

Here’s are some images from Flickr I used for inspiration:

But I can of had an idealised image in my head also.

Firstly I had to sand down the rough patch left by the stem of the spoon and then I worked on the edges of the bowl. I then formed a tapered point on a small piece of wire and curved it then flattened it and soldered it to the bowl. Still needs a lot of refining and work and I need to figure out how to add a stick pin or brooch pin without distracting from the simplicity of the form – it’s nice to explore ideas.
