New Button Chokers
September 29th, 2010
Whilst recouperating last week I made myself a button choker to cheer myself up. I bought some really lovely 2mm leather thonging a while back and have never used it and when I was in London I managed to get hold of some really lovely buttons at the Spittalfields market – I lay there bored out of my brains and the idea of chokers came to mind.
This is the one I made for myself:

The leather is Round Greek Leather Cord and is apparently “widely acknowledged to be the best leather cord available” according to Palmer Metals where I get it from. It is really lovely to work with and I finished the ends of with these really nice leaf cord pinch ends.

I then got to work making more:

Lots of different colours and styles to choose from. Some have five buttons, some four, some three and some just a couple.
I now have a dilema though!
- Do I make them all the same size to fit my neck and add the silver cord pinch ends and clasps?
- Or leave them open and when someone picks one at a craft fair, finish it off to fit them?
- Or do I package them up with the findings and sell them as unfinished chokers that people can size themselves?
Would love to hear your suggestions! As I’m in a pickle with what to do.

They are lovely! I would finish them rather than selling the findings separately – I’m not sure how much hassle it is to finish them on the spot at craft fairs. Maybego for a standard size with an optional extender chain?

Not sure how I would add an extender chain to this…

I’m with Helen’s suggestion, especially if your fair’s are busy. Can you loop the extender using a small jumpring on the “loop” side of the necklace (as opposed to the clasp side)?
Oh, & they’re just gorgeous by the way!

These are great – I like the idea of finishing them off at craft fairs. Can you make a standard size and remake if needed? The 3rd option is not so good some people can´t see so well to do something so fiddly.

I’m torn as I’d like them all finished and displayed as finished pieces, but one size doesn’t necessarily fit all. I like the idea of an extender chain and I guess I could make them all one size, but add a few chain links to the non clasp side so people can adjust it to suit – but by doing this would mean the clasp wouldn’t sit in the centre at the back – is that an issue do you think??

They are Beautiful! You might want to have a few basic lengths already. This is one thing on my mind. Hope it helps and don’t fret everything will be fine, enjoy, Dorothy!

I like the idea of the extra links – clasps never stay in the centre anyway
Personally I like having the option to adjust the length – even for a choker sometimes I prefer to wear it a little longer, sometimes shorter. Hope that helps!

There is an adjustable knotted method. I’m not surehow to describe. Take the end of the right side of the cord and tie a knot around the left cord about 2 inches from the end. Then take the end of the left cord, and tie a knot around the right cord a little ways from the end. To lengthen the choker, pull the 2 knots clsoer together, and to make it tighter pull the 2 knots farther away. I’vee done it on mens necklaces and bracelets.

It’s called a slip knot.
