I want to learn to crochet!
March 15th, 2011
This week’s Tutorial Tuesday is a fabulously simple (if you know how to crochet) tutorial on how to make your own slippers. I saw this image and was green with envy! They are so cute and I want to make myself some now!
One problem I foresee is that I don’t know how to crochet. I’m a little bit obsessed with the colour green at the moment and combining this with other bright colours, so the fact that these slippers are green with a red trim, makes me want to make them even more!

I’ve tried to crochet in the past and a few friends have tried to teach me, but it just doesn’t make sense like knitting does – in my opinion it’s not hard to go wrong or get lost when you’re knitting – but with crochet I never know how many rows I’ve done, or how many stitches or what stitch to use either. But I really want to make myself a pair of these slippers.
We’re going to be starting IVF soon and with all the hospital visits required it’s essential that I get myself a pair of slippers and a dressing gown – it’s in the literature and these items are a requirement – how lovely it would be if I could make a pair of these before we start treatment as they’re sure to keep me in a positive state of mind – much like my happy shoes.
Anyway if I understood crochet at all I’m sure I would find the tutorial a sinch, but as it stands I look at the beautiful images and think ‘that looks easy enough’ but I’m sure I’m going to find it a total struggle and every time the word ’round’ is mention I think of being in a boxing ring and fighting my way through it!

You can see the final slippers and the entire tutorial on the Zoom Yummy blog here.
I’m going to hunt out my wool box tomorrow as I’m sure I’ve got some green wool and going to get cracking on learning what all the required stitches are and will get started on the ‘making’ once I understand the whole process – I’m sure I’m going to make a ton of mistakes before I get anywhere, but hopefully I won’t give up. If you have any top crochet tips, then please share them with me as I am a total beginner!
If you’re a crochet guru – I’m sure you’ll have made a hundred pairs by the time I’ve made one – I’m a UK 7.5 – if you want to donate a pair – preferably in green wool!
Enjoy!

I’m better with knitting too. I’ve completed a few crochet projects though. Like learning to knit, it takes practice and yeah, you probably will have to go back to fix mistakes a few times. I’d like to give these slippers a try. Was any particular type of yarn recommended? I was thinking acrylic or cotton. I don’t want to make them out of something that will cause me to go flying on a smooth floor. My best crochet advice is just start the project and trust the pattern. I feel totally in blind when I start a crochet project because I often don’t see how the pattern will take shape, but as it takes shape and I can see it, I start to understand the pattern more. Also, look on youtube for tutorials on how to do specific stitches. Good luck with these and IVF.

After several attempts at this pattern I gave up and found another one that was far easier to follow – not sure of the link though as I printed the instructions out and didn’t make a note of the website – I managed to complete a set of slippers just before treatment started and they were fab for all my hospital visits. IVF was a success but resulted in an ectopic and I had to have emergency surgery to have it removed. All rather chaotic and emotional but we’re so delighted we got pregnant even though it was just for a short while. Feeling really positive about round two now.

I’m also better with knitting but mainly because my rubbish wrist muscles can cope better with it! I’d like to have a got at these, they’re such a pretty colour. Good luck with your IVF.
