Quill is one of many rings in my A.S.Ornate ring collection. Quill is a beautiful ring made from an antique silver teaspoon with a heavily decorated stem in the form of a feather – very flamboyant and elegant, reminiscent of the feathers used in ancient times as quills for writing.

The teaspoon was originally made in 1963 by a silversmith trading under the name of J B Chatterley & Sons Ltd who was based in Birmingham. Who knows what journeys it’s been on and the people it’s encountered, not to mention the amount of tea it has stirred or the gossip it’s heard in it’s lifetime before being discovered by me at the back of a cabinet in an antique shop.

Only one of these rings exists – unique, one of a kind.

Currently a UK size V, it could be enlarged slightly to a W or an X, or reduced to smaller sizes down to a P.

The original hallmark and makers mark have been left intact and are clearly visible on the inside of the ring. This ring, as with all my antique silverware rings, comes with a small provenance tag to identify the silversmith who originally made the spoon, the year it was made and the location of the assay office that hallmarked it.

Making jewellery from antique silverware is something I really enjoy. I love stripping away the years of tarnish and neglect and breathing new life into these forgotten things and making them into something precious that can be given as a gift or keepsake. Maybe the date is relevant to you or the detail in the design, but there’s always something special about an item with so much history – working with it as well as wearing the finished piece.
