If you’ve not seen Judith Brown’s jewellery before, then please go check out her website now! She combines fine silver and coloured wires with vintage haberdashery items to make unique pieces of jewellery with an intricacy and delicacy reminiscent of lace.

Working from her studio on the Wirral in Northwest England she takes functional press studs, hooks and eyes, lovely carved antique mother of pearl buttons as well as delicate old lace and upcycles them into quirky yet wearable jewellery with a lovely nostalgic feel. This is emphasized by her own unique stitching technique which she’s developed and finely tuned over the years.

I see so much button jewellery these days that is so samey and it’s so refreshing to come across someone so talented who’s put their own twist on such simple everyday items. Here are a few example of her work…

I recently discovered the blog of Eric Barclay and thought I’d share it with you. He’s a very talented illustrator as can be seen from his website and I really like his style, but if you explore his blog you’ll find that he’s also rather good at making stuff from odds and ends – and you know how much I love recycling!

He takes everyday items normally destined for the bin, like soda cans and empty coffee jars and adds his creative illustrative flair to them and brings them to life. have a look at these examples to see what I mean:

This is something I might have to try – making polymer clay buttons – there are some vintage buttons that are unique and sometimes I find it hard to part with some of the jewellery I make as I know I’ll never come across another button like that again. With this idea, I could make a mould and create a duplicate to keep in my collection for reference and to remember.

Check out the work of Chris Kenny.

Chris Kenny’s three-dimensional ‘drawings’ and collage-constructions are made from fragments of maps, strips of found text, or even twigs: objects or phrases of the same type are mounted on pins and organised in a way that suggests an intention to rationalise the differences between them.

And they are lovely…

Chris Kenny is represented by England & Co and you can find out more about the artist and the work here…

I’ve worked with cement in the past when I studies sculpture at art college and it’s a great material to work with. Since then I’ve only ever encountered cement through building projects, like our mammoth kitchen renovation project [still ongoing]. So it’s amazing to come across a site like this and find cement being used for jewellery.

It’s not a very eco friendly product so I shouldn’t really be singing it’s praises, but these rings are amazing and they totally transform the material from something mundane and industrial into something delicate and precious.

The rings are made by 22designstudio which was founded by Sean Yu and Yiting Cheng – both graduates from the Industrial Design Department of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan.

So imagine my surprise when I came across this shop called Andie’s Speciality Sweets on Etsy selling edible buttons!

Batteries are quite hard to recycle and you’re never quite sure what happens to them once you’ve dropped them into a box at your local supermarket – do they get re-processed in the UK or shipped abroad and have to travel great distances in order to be recycled. So it was a joy to find the work of Michel de Broin today who create a piece entitled “Dead Star” made from used up batteries.

Dead Star is made from residual battery at the end of their duty. Left to itself, the sculpture will slowly cool down since there is no longer electronic activity taking place in it. The hundreds of batteries were once used to power appliances before they finish their cycle in a recycle facility. Retrieved from death, they were assembled again in this whole structure.

Lovely!
