We had a lovely day out the other day, despite setting off in the pouring rain. We drove up to Perth to visit The Burning Question to look at wood burning stoves as we need one for our lounge. I recently re-designed their website so it was lovely to go up and meet them in person and get their expert advice.

We’ve been concentrating on the kitchen for most part of this year, but my studio and the downstairs loo are next on the list and I’ve been busy patching up the walls and filling in holes so that they are ready for sanding and painting.

Ages ago we decided to have a glass splash back in our new kitchen – either coloured glass, or just plain glass with a painted wall behind. BUT now that the walls have been exposed (they were covered in tile and units) and replastered, a glass splash back is out of the question as the walls are so wonky (it’s a very old house). So we’re looking into the idea of glass tiles instead.

I love handmade gifts! I love receiving them and I love making them and giving them too. This year I’ve been giving away a lot of my handmade glass stars that I’ve made in an evening class and I only have one left and that one I’m keeping for myself. Here’s a selection of things you can make yourself either as gifts, or to decorate your home, or as a treat for yourself.

Re-routing pipes! We’ve been living with our 70’s kitchen for far too long now and it’s time to tackle it. We’ve put it off for so long due to lack of funds and also it’s such a huge task that just thinking about it makes our brains melt. But we’ve been deliberating about it for far too long and we’ve decided to take action now. Most people think we’re mad to start this three weeks before Christmas, but what with the VAT increases in Janaury we’re going to save ourselves a lot of money ordering everything now.

Looking for a belfast sink! We’re going to be turning the back porch into a little bit of a utility room and that’s where the washing machine and freezer are going to go. Between them we want to put a small belfast sink, so I went on a hunt for one recently. We have one salvage yard close-ish to us just past Kincarden Brdige – it’s called Hargreaves and it’s abrialliant place for belfast sinks.

How is it possible that the temperature in our kitchen is several degrees lower than the temperature in our greenhouse?

We had amazing weather last weekend. So we ditched the interior DIY plans and covered ourselves in a layer of protective sun cream and headed out to the garden. We’ve been wanting to get the greenhouse up ever since we moved in several years ago, but it’s just never happened. We even ordered the sand and that’s been sitting in our driveway for the past year or so, making it really difficult to put the bins out – so annoying.

We’ve been pretty slow on the renovation front this year and after knocking great big holes in our studio walls in January nothing much happened with regards to installing our wood burning stoves for quite a while. Then Colin laid the hearths last month and last week we got round to getting the holes in the walls plastered up and chimney caps put on and the wood burners fully installed.

We hate the concrete garden we have at the front of the house and want to do something about it this summer. It’s going to mean trying to hack away at it with a pick axe ourselves, or if that fails, hiring someone with a pneumatic drill.
A previous owner decided to embed a load of large stones in concrete and then fill in the gaps with small red, white and grey gravel. We don’t know how deep the concrete is.
