It’s soon to be Mother’s Day in America and what a day to celebrate! I had my first ever Mother’s day this year, as we celebrate it in March here in Scotland, and it was so special – my boys made it a really great day and made me feel very appreciated for all the hard work that I do. Whilst taking time out from DIY to watch the Olympic opening ceremony, I started playing about with some boxes of colourful buttons I bought ages ago. Combined with some red thread I came up with some new slinky button necklaces.

I made a few of these necklaces a while ago and had difficulty decided on how to photograph them. I played around with a few ideas and never really made any conclusions as to the best approach. I not only find them hard to photograph, I also find them hard to display at craft fairs as well! So I decided to have another go today as I’ve thought about a way I could package them up into bags ready for display/sale and might add some to my shop this week.

I thought I’d try photographing my necklaces on a model today – namely me – so I set up the camera on a tripod and got my cable release out. After many different choices of top, I settled for my black icebreaker and took a few snaps. With these necklaces, it’s nice to see them it situ i.e. hung around the neck to get a sense of how they look when you’re wearing them rather than the images I’ve taken of them in the studio lying flat on a wooden board.

I’ve been doing a lot of sitting on the sofa watching telly recently as I’ve not been able to do much DIY or work due to my arm injury. But I’ve got to keep my arm and hand active so I’ve been doing short bursts of Milomade activities and one of these has been to make lots of my button strand necklaces.
