Spoons

Haley Bates - Spoon Sculpture

Another recent Pinterest find is the artist Haley Bates. I love finding people who work with spoons as they’re such a passion of mine.

Haley Bates takes the humble spoon and transforms it, reconfigures it and manipulates the metal so that the object takes on new meaning. We never really think of the mass of a spoon, but the image above really highlights the amount of metal a spoon is actually made of and in the process the artist has created a skeletal, lightweight structure that is a ghost of the original object.

With my new ‘Echoes’ collection, I’ve been drilling holes in my flattened silver spoon bowls and have collected many fine silver tendrils like these – I use them to texure the metal pieces through hammering and the use of the rolling mill and through these processes they’re transformed into flattened tangled forms.
