Kinghorn Bottle Works at Pettycur Bay, down the road from where I live, was established in 1902 and changed hands in 1908 and became the Kinghorn Bottle Company supplying the whiskey trade. It closed in 1982, then owned by the United Glass Company and was demolished a few years later.
The glass made in Fife was produced from local beach sand and as it was customary to dump any waste glass directly into the sea. I love the idea that what was once local sand, was converted into glass and then further transformed by the sea into the treasure I find on the beaches today.
Nature has taken these small shards of glass, dropped into the ocean decades ago and transformed them into beautiful frosted jewels. Worn down to smooth organic forms by the constant ebb and flow of the tide, it's a mystery where exactly these jewels originated from, in what form and how long ago.
Each of my sea glass items is unique - tumbled and smoothed by the ocean, not one piece of glass is ever the same as another. Each piece of glass is treated with care and combined with precious metals to form rings, pendants or earrings.
