Almost everyone has a button collection stashed away somewhere in a box or a jar. Often this has been handed down through the generations and is lovingly referred to as Granny's button tin. We all have happy, nostalgic childhood memories of plunging our tiny hands into a large tin full to the brim of buttons and searching for the prettiest in the tin - the one with a nice pattern or the one that is the most perfect pink you've ever seen.
I've been collecting buttons for a long time and love trawling through antique stores and charity shops to find unique little treasures amongst the bric-a-brac and paraphenalia. My button collections are stored in small Adana Letterpress cabinets or in jars, as I like to have them around my studio and see the colours on a regular basis.
Most of my button pieces are unique, one of a kind creations, never to be repeated, others become limited edition sets. Distinctive buttons are destined to be transformed into pendants, earrings and cufflinks. The buttons are set in silver which is often oxidised to give it an antiqued look. Pendants are hung from fine delicate 40cm chains, earrings from handcrafted earwires.
Button charm bracelets are made with a variety of buttons in different colours, sizes and finishes. Each button is individually handwired with silver wire and attached to a delicate 20cm sterling silver chain. These bracelets hang beautifully from the wrist and make a lovely sound as you move and each bracelet contains a unique selection of buttons.
