These rings are made with gorgeous green sea glass sourced from the beaches of Kinghorn, Fife on the east coast of Scotland. There’s quite a history of glassmaking in this area, from the bottle works that used to run down in Pettycur Bay to the glass works at Wymess Caves a bit further north. The green sea glass used to make these rings most probably originates from the Bottle Works that operated at Pettycur Bay, a beach down the road from my house in Kinghorn. Because it was located directly by the beach it probably used seashore sand to create the glass.
Any waste glass used to be dumped into the sea and it’s been swished about for years and years by the incoming and outgoing tides and polished and smoothed in the process. The Bottle Works closed down in 1982 and there isn’t any evidence of it’s existence now, apart from all the pieces of green sea glass found on the beach.
The sea glass in each ring is a deep emerald green and held in place by 4 prongs of silver that have been balled at the end and form a claw around the pieces of glass. These claw settings are attached to long pieces of textured thick silver wire that are twisted round into a spiral to form an adjustable ring shank. The silver has been oxidised and polished back to reveal a gorgeous organic hammered texture, reminiscent of the ripples on the surface of the sea.
Beautiful and original, they make a stunning addition to any jewellery collection and are made from 100% recycled materials, as the silver used to make the claw settings and ring shanks is EcoSilver.
There are three rings available – each totally unique. They are not closed and the long twisted ring shanks can be adjusted to suit most ring sizes.
