Did you know that April is National Letterwriting Month? I didn’t until today when I saw a post on Instagram and followed a trail that eventually led me here: www.writeoncampaign.com
Write_On is a mission driven campaign to promote joy, creativity, expression, and connection through hand-written correspondence. The lovely people at Egg Press started the campaign #write_on in 2014 encouraging people to write 30 letters in 30 days and it’s still going strong 4yrs on.
I love that! I’m all for it but guilty of not writing letters often enough. I’m tempted to give this challenge a go.
I recently received a parcel from a complete stranger – a set of spoons I bought on eBay – and when it came through my letterbox it made me smile so much. I felt an instant connection with a kindred spirit as here was someone who’d gone that extra mile to make my parcel less than ordinary and much more than just something I ordered online in a boring brown jiffy envelope and I loved it.
I will probably keep this envelope forever alongside so many others I’ve kept for sentimental reasons.
I’ve still got all the envelopes that my dear late friend Nick Dewar sent me from America, with his lovely handwriting, that I hope will never fade. I’ve still got tiny cards my great uncle wrote me when I was child, in a language I can no longer read – I can’t part with them. They are precious moments in time that I can revisit over and over and remember so many things.
I also found this parcel on my porch floor last month – what a joy to receive – it really made my day that my post was smiling up at me from the floor. It made me feel connected with the world outside my studio.
So when I read about #write_on and watched this video, it really warmed my heart and I’m on a mission now to start writing – I will try and write and send 30 letters this month and hopefully by doing this will get into a habit of doing so and continue on and on. And maybe the people who receive my letters will write back and also start writing more. However, I’ll have a bit of catching up to do as it’s already the 4th of April and I’ve not written any letters this month yet.
We’re so focused on the digital these days and sharing so much with so many people at once that I think we’ve forgotten the beauty of focusing on the individual and the simplicity of the written word. Not typed, but inked into paper.
I’m not sure I can think of 30 different people to write to, but maybe I don’t have to write to 30 different people. Maybe I could just choose one person to write to everyday, or a handful of folk to write to each week.
Anyway, I’m so glad I stumbled upon this challenge and I’m going to get writing this week!
I love sending letters.
I love receiving them too…. hint hint….
So if you fancy joining in, my address is here on my website. It’d be lovely to hear from you. And if you write to me, I’ll write back I promise!!!!
