Life begins at 40…

…so I’m told, but I’m not having a good start to the year, what with my RSI/CTS issues and being ordered to take it easy and do nothing – not so easy for someone who can’t sit still and has tons of things to do and be getting on with. Maybe 40 is when all the aches and pains begin and I can truly become a grumpy old lady? I’m doing quite well at that and I’m only a few hours in…

So it’s my birthday today and I think I’m going to treat it as just another day as Colin’s gone off to work and I’m on my own all day after a frenzied few minutes of present opening before Colin had to dash for his train. I’ll be baking my own cake today – something I do every year – might try a different recipe though as I re-discovered my Green&Blacks recipe book the other day and I’m sure they’ll have a fab chocolate cake recipe or two.

So I’m officially a grumpy old lady at last – and loving it – and I’m chuffed to bits with my pressies! I am now the proud owner of a super duper brand new shiny fishing rod with all the reels and  lures I could possibly need. I’ve dropped enough hints about this for ages and I’m glad Colin took the bait – no pun intended! I’m really looking forward to going sea fishing on a regular basis this year, catching lots of fish and making lots of tasty fish suppers.

Fish Discard

Did you watch any of Hugh’s Fish Fight last week on the TV – if not? Why not? Visit the website, watch the videos, sign up for the campaign!

Also if you missed any of Jamie’s Fish Suppers, you can watch them here. There are also a lot of sustainable fish recipes here.

After watching all of Hugh’s Fish Fight and the other documentaries about fish the other week, it’s really put me off buying fish from supermarkets – I can’t believe how many fish on the Fresh Fish counter at Asda are labelled as ‘previously frozen’ which means they could be up to 9 months old – rather than FRESH – and the documentary I saw about prawns means I’m never eating them again, unless I know exactly where they’ve been caught and landed – and preferably from this country – it’s insane that so much tasty amazing Scottish produce gets shipped all over the world and I can’t go to my local supermarket and buy it.

I’m also shocked that out of all the different tins of tuna available on the shelves, only 1 tin out of the many was caught in a sustainable way – by pole and line – that’s the tin that went into my basket the week and I’m glad I’m now aware of how destructive the fishing industry is and able to make this choice and support a more sustainable way of fishing – ok it’s a small gesture, but if we all choose to only buy pole and line caught tuna then the way tuna is fished will have to change.

Please read the labels when buying fish or ask where it’s come from and be more aware of what it is you are supporting by making your purchase.
