Close but no cigar…

I recently entered the photography competition on the Makers-Online website. The best product photo competition was set up to accompany their feature on taking product photos, and closed on 26th March 2010. I got an email from Luke on Thursday to say that there were 136 entries in total and I was one of the 27 to be shortlisted – how exciting!

This is the image I entered:

This image was taken on my old trusty compact canon ixus using the macro setting. I have a mini collapsible studio tent and I use either natural daylight or two lamps fixed with daylight bulbs or a mixture of the two to take images of my work. With this piece I wanted to capture the translucency of the glass. I suspended the pendant in such a way that it rested upright so the light could shine through it. The image shows the back of the pendant and through trial and error and lots of repositioning I managed to get the silver on the front of the pendant to catch the light – this shows through the glass and gives the piece a lovely glow as well as casting a very soft shadow on the left

However I didn’t win…Damn! This is the email I got from Luke today:

After way too much deliberation, we finally arrived at a decision regarding the winner, and she is Chloe Livingstone! So congratulations to her. But really we thought they were all excellent and all deserved the £200, but unfortunately there can be only one.

Well done to Chloe for a very imaginative product shot. Find out more and see the winning entry and the other shortlisted images by following this link.
